Gwent v. Sefton
DONCASTER REPEAT…………………….
CWMBRAN STADIUM
The second bank holiday weekend in May saw Cwmbran Stadium stage the third annual “WELSH INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT”. Eight teams from all over the United Kingdom and Belgium arrived in Southeast Wales to compete for the title of W.I.T. Winners 2007.
Teams were split into pools of four as follows:
Pool A Pool B ABC Gwent Doncaster Danum Sefton Stars Oostkamp City of Nottingham Tamar Valley Cannons City Academy, Bristol Taunton Tigers
On Saturday 26th a round robin tournament was held to establish placing’s in the groups for the cross over games. After the 12 games had been completed the Sunday fixtures were as follows:
TOP HALF OF THE TOURNAMENT (places 1 – 4) Semi – finals: Oostkamp v ABC Gwent Doncaster Danum v Sefton Stars
BOTTOM HALF OF THE TOURNAMENT (places 5 – 8)
Tamar Valley v Bristol Taunton Tigers v City of Nottingham.
In two highly competitive semi’s in the top half of the group, Doncaster eased away from Sefton to book a place in their second consecutive final whilst Oostkamp stole the game from Gwent in a 2 point thriller.
Tamar Valley and City of Nottingham won through to their respective placing matches to battle for 5 / 6 place, which left Tamar and Bristol to play for pride in the wooden sppon game. The final was a highly competitive affair with Oostkamp playing out of themselves to stay in the game with a Doncaster squad that had beaten them comfortably in the pool games. A valiant effort by Ooskamp still left them short. Injuries to key players hindered Coach Dany Hendrix options, whilst Doncaster Coach Bob Martin was able to call on all of the players that had lead his squad to an England Final Four appearance earlier in the month.
In the third and fourth place playoff, Sefton were able to avenge their pool game defeat to home club ABC Gwent. Playing with more confidence and in a relaxed manor Sefton’s offence flowed whilst ABC struggled to hit the heights of the previous day.

BASKETBALL WITHOUT BORDERS. NBA and Nike joined forces last summer to stage the first European “Basketball without Borders” camp at the Marciulionis Basketball Academy in Vilnius, Lithuania. Players from all over Europe arrived in the Lithuanian city in late June in order to learn from the likes of Herb Brown (Atlanta Hawks), Melvin Hunt (Cleveland Cavs), Don Newman (San Antonio) of the NBA and Tiit Sokk (Nybit), Aleksander Volkov (BC Kyiv) Rimas Kurtinaitis (Azerbaijan) of Euro - league. Assisting in the coaching were NBA players like Samuel Dalembert of the Sixers, Zydrunas Ilgauskas of the Cavaliers, Zaza Pachulia of the Hawks and Linas Kleiza of the Nuggets. Danial McKay of the Reading Rockets and Matthew Williams of the Manchester Magic represented Great Britain in the event. Both found the going tough in this esteemed pool of talent and never really made an impact with their chosen squads. Williams and McKay at Camp |
